Our tree was decorated by graduates of the Functional Restoration Program at the Bay Area Pain & Wellness Center (BAPWC). This program is a six-week outpatient program designed to help injured workers manage their chronic pain. Part of this interdisciplinary program integrates art therapy as a way to express feelings about pain.
The decorations for this tree were inspired by a Mandala workshop offered at BAPWC. The word "Mandala" is from the classical Indian language of Sanskrit. It is loosely translated to mean "circle". Mandala art has a long history and is recognized for its spiritual meaning and representation of wholeness and completion. The meditative act of coloring mandalas help individuals slow down thoughts, connect to self, creating insight, and creative nourishment for the mind and body.
