We have a counselor who participates in Champ Camp, a summer camp for burn injured children that is run by the Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundation. The counselor "Flash" (we all have nicknames at Champ Camp), was diagnosed with cancer of the lymph nodes of his neck in late May. Because of his urgent need for treatment, Flash was not able to attend Champ Camp, where he has been a counselor for 15 years.
During the summer Flash was going daily to Stanford for Chemotherapy and Radiation treatments. He was unable to work for about 5 months. His fellow counselors and friends purchased a Elves Tree at Christmas in the Park, decorated it with Fire Department ornaments and then placed the name of every counselor who donated Christmas gifts for Flash and his kids on the tree.
We set a date of December 5th to have Flash and his kids come to the park for decorating the tree. Flash was unaware that he and his kids were the guests of honor that day. 25 fellow camp counselors along with spouses and family brought out 6 large bags of toys, gift cards and other presents for Flash and his daughters (ages 9 & 11). It was a very emotional time for all of us.
Flash has been clear of cancer for about a month and the outlook looks very good.
